Professor Mark Harris is a professor of environmental chemistry and applied climatology in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science at the Northern Caribbean University. Having grown up in the Maroon community of Moore Town, Portland, Professor Harris attended Titchfield School. He was awarded his bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) in physical geography, minoring in geology, from the University of Windsor, Canada and the M.Sc. in soil science followed by the PhD in environmental geoscience from Adelaide University, Australia. Professor Harris' research interests include: identifying practical steps for addressing climate change impacts, high content of certain chemicals in food and improving the physical and chemical structure of topsoil removed for bauxite mining and of bauxite waste. Professor Harris was awarded the Silver Musgrave Medal in 2021 for his contribution to science. He has authored more than 30 research papers and several books, his latest being 'Confronting Global Climate Change: Experiments and Applications in the Tropics', which was presented to Prime Minister Andrew Holness in 2024.
